This year’s top performer in the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination, Olivia Alleyne, is no stranger to excellence when it comes to academic achievement. The outstanding primary school student of Christ Church Girls’ School earlier signaled her prowess in essay writing by winning the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados’ (HSFB) Essay Competition for two consecutive years, in 2006 and 2007. On each occasion she captured the first prize of a voucher for $400, plus a year’s subscription to National Kids Geographic Magazine.

The Annual Poster and Essay Competition for Primary Schools is organized by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados in partnership with Guardian Life of the Caribbean Limited, in recognition of World Heart Day. Students between the ages of 5 and 8 years are invited to draw or paint a poster using a selected health theme, while those between 9 and 11 are asked to write an essay of not more than 350 words on the same theme. Prizes in each category are $400 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third. Each winner also receives a one-year subscription to National Kids Geographic Magazine, while the school producing the first prize winner gets a prize to the value of $1,000.

CEO of the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados, Adrian Randall, congratulated Olivia on her achievement. “Winning the Essay Competition two years running was quite an feat, and to top it off by taking first place in the Common Entrance examination is truly remarkable.”

“It is pleasing to see one of the Foundation’s family, as it were, do so well”, Randall continued, “and we look forward to her continuing to achieve great heights in the years to come”.

Randall said that he also looked forward to the students in this year’s Poster and Essay Competition emulating Olivia’s excellent standards.
