Silver dollars for children 2007

Silver Dollars 2007

The Silver Dollars for Children drive, organized by the Kiwanis Club of Bridgetown, came off on Sunday October 14, 2007. Now an annual event, the fundraising drive was originally slated for Sunday, September 23, but was postponed.

Persons were invited to contribute to children’s charities by placing one Barbados silver dollar along a specially cordoned off mile of highway between Bay Street and the Garrison Savannah. The starting point was directly opposite Government Headquarters, where at 7 a.m. the first coin was laid. The drive ended around 6 in the evening.

Kiwanis President Roy Ward reminded those gathered at the opening ceremony that the focus of the effort was on the young, thus the theme: “One inch for every child”. For that reason, children from a number of children’s homes, organizations and communities were specially invited to attend and to lay the first coins. Among those was 11-year-old Michael Clarke, who recently suffered a stroke, and who is making good recovery progress in the CDP&R programme of monitored exercise and counseling at the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados.

HSFB - SIlver Dollars for children 2007Steady rain throughout the day put a damper on participation by the public, but altogether a sterling effort was put in by the volunteers, and the event went well. Although the goal of a mile of coins was not fully achieved, the results were satisfying, and the Kiwanis Club of Bridgetown will shortly be announcing just how much they are able to distribute to the various charities.

In addition to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados, other charities to benefit from the drive are The Learning Centre, the Barbados Cancer Society, the Hope Foundation, The Asthma Association of Barbados, the Barbados Council for the Disabled, the Dyslexia Association and HIV/AIDS.
