Heartline Magazine October - December 2007
Open day at the Foundation
Open
day on Tuesday October 2 at the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s
headquarters on Jemmotts Lane, St. Michael was a pleasing
occasion when a steady stream of visitors were able to learn
more about the work of the Foundation in cardiovascular disease
prevention and rehabilitation, also in emergency cardiac care
and first aid instruction.
This was the second in a series of events
organized by the Foundation for Barbados Heart & Stroke Week, in
recognition of World Heart Day, which fell on September 30,
2007. The Week began with a Church Service on World Heart Day.
Newly appointed CDP&R manager, Catherine
Charles and members of her staff took the opportunity to explain
the services offered by the Foundation, including the monitored
exercise programme in the “Gym with a Difference”, also dietary
and psychological counselling for persons who have had heart
disease or a stroke or who are at risk.
Visitors
also found out more about the many courses provided in emergency
cardiac care, including Adult First Aid and Paediatric First
Aid, CPR, Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
ECC Manager, Kim Clarke-Grant, formerly CDP&R Manager, joined
with leading instructor Ryan Selby and other instructors in
pointing out the benefits of the courses, some of which are
targeted to health care professionals and others to the general
public. Throughout the day Mr. Selby gave demonstrations in
Basic Life Support and First Aid, also in the use of the
Automated External Defibrillator, a simple but revolutionary
device that restarts the dying heart.
Several business associates of the
Foundation showed their support and also took the opportunity to
display their products and services. These included The Barbados
Reference Laboratory, who conducted free blood sugar and
cholesterol tests, Lasco Ltd. and BICO who distributed samples
of their health products. Carib Rehab, Sanofi Aventis, Stokes &
Bynoe Ltd. displayed a variety of products related to heart
health care.
