Celebrating World Heart Day

Heart disease and stroke is the world's largest killer, claiming 17.5 million lives each year. That's why World Heart Day was created, to create public awareness of risk factors for heart disease and stroke and to promote preventive measures.

The theme of this year's World Heart Day, which was celebrated on September 30, 2007, was “Team Up for Healthy Hearts!” Organized by World Heart Federation members and partners, World Heart Day activities included free screenings, walks, runs, jump rope sessions, fitness events, public talks, scientific forums, exhibitions, concerts, sports tournaments and much more

As with last year The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados Inc. (HSFB) staged a Week of activities in observance of World Heart Day.

Guardian Life of the Caribbean partnered the Foundation for the third year running, sponsoring the major event of the Week, an Essay and Poster Competition for Primary School children, which began earlier in the year and culminated with an Awards Function and Lecture on Thursday October 4, 2007.

During the day, on Thursday, the Heart & Stroke Foundation held a Mini-Health Fair at Harrison College, St. Michael, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., which saw a large number of students and teachers of the school, as well as parents, show a keen interest in the activities of the Foundation.

Barbados Heart & Stroke Week began with a Thanksgiving Church Service at St. Matthias Anglican Church in Christ Church on Sunday September 30. The service was led by Reverend Maurice Thorne and was attended by senior members of the Foundation, including president Dru Symmonds, CEO Adrian Randall and Fundraising and Administration Manager Jennifer Randall. Also at the service were top executives of the sponsors, including Maria Rivas McMillan, Group Vice-President, Corporate Communications, Guardian Holdings Ltd., John Jones, General Manager Guardian General Insurance and Guardian Life’s Principal Representative in Barbados, and Patrick Charles, Manager of Life Sales, Guardian Life Insurance.

Tuesday October 2 was Open Day at the Foundation, and a steady stream of visitors took the opportunity to learn more about the work of the Foundation in cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation, also in emergency cardiac care and first aid instruction.

The Week of Activities ended on Saturday October 6, 2007 with a Fish Supper which was held outdoors at the Foundation’s headquarters on Jemmotts Lane, and which was well patronized by staff, members and friends.
