Management changes at the Foundation
The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HSFB)
recently announced changes to the management of two key areas of
its operations – the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and
Rehabilitation (CDP&R) and Emergency Cardiac Care departments.
Former CDP&R manager, Kim Clarke-Grant now heads the ECC
section, with added responsibilities, while Catherine Charles
has joined the Foundation as CDP&R manager. Both appointments
took effect from October 1st 2007.
Career switch for Catherine Charles
Mrs. Charles brings to her position a wealth of experience in
the medical sales field, having worked for the past seventeen
years with leading pharmaceutical companies.
From 1990 to 1995 she was medical sales
representative for Glaxo Caribbean, with responsibility for
Barbados, Antigua, St. Vincent and Grenada. From 1995 to 2000
she held the post of Senior Medical Sales Representative with
GlaxoWellcome Caribbean, and from 2001-2005 She was Senior

HSFB, she was medical representative for B. Braun Sutures at
Collins Ltd.
The career switch from medical sales to
managing the “Gym with a Difference” and overseeing the
Foundation’s Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and
Rehabilitation programme is something that Mrs. Charles looks
forward to with anticipation.
“It’s a nice change”, she said. “For one
thing, there’s a lot less traveling. I’m in a more settled
environment, and I am able to spend more time in my workplace,
and” she added, “a bit more time with my family.” Mrs. Charles
is married to Dr. Brian Charles, Associate Lecturer, University
of the West Indies and consultant and Dive Physician, Accident &
Emergency Department, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and the couple
has two daughters.
She continued: “And, in a way I’m still in
the medical field, except that now I am working in an area that
is more people oriented. So, I get the best of both worlds.”
Mrs. Charles received her early education at Queens College,
Barbados, and is also a graduate of The London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine, England and of the University of the West
Indies. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology (First

New challenges for Kim Clarke-Grant

and, prior to her appointment as ECC Manager on October 1, 2007,
had been the Manager of the CDP&R programme since February 2006.
She is an instructor for Heart Saver and BCLS training.
A graduate of Christ Church Foundation
School and the Barbados Community College, Mrs. Clarke-Grant

Management and is currently pursuing studies in Human Resources
Management at BIMAP.

Training Course" in Washington D.C. She is a member of the Child
Care Board and is an executive member of the Pinelands Creative
Workshop.
She has served as a full time registered
nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and has also done duties
at Woodside Memorial Clinic, West Coast Medical Clinic and
Bayview Hospital.
“While I thoroughly enjoyed my stint as CDP&R
Manager” said Mrs. Clarke-Grant, “I look forward to my shift in
responsibilities at the Foundation, and to the opportunities
given me to not only expand my knowledge of the span of
activities at the Foundation, but also to get a more in-depth
understanding of the operations of charitable institutions and
of NGOs as a whole. This will be of lasting benefit to my future
career development and will certainly strengthen my management
skills.”
“I also look forward to expanding my
contacts with the business sector and with community
organizations in general,” she said, adding. “The ECC programme
typically targets the community, and we at the Foundation have
to make every effort to expand our outreach programmes and
instruction in emergency cardiac care and in first aid, as well
as in the benefits of healthy living and exercise, to
businesses, schools, sports clubs, community organizations,
everyone.”
