The contribution that Barbadians individuals and
organizations overseas make to their homeland was exemplified recently when the
Decker’s Sports and Social Club Cricket Section, based in the UK, donated a sum
of money to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados.
The presentation of 450 pounds sterling was made on
September 27th at the Foundation’s headquarters on Jemmotts Lane by the club’s
local representative, Ian Browne, and was part of the funds raised by Deckers at
a Charity 20/20 Cricket Tournament and Fun Day held on August 20, 2006 at
Surbiton Surrey.
The proceeds were the result of generous donations made by
persons taking part in the various events, and were shared by the Heart
Foundations of Barbados and Jamaica, as well as the Organization for Sickle Cell
Anaemia Research, and Kiwanis International, Brixton. The current president of
Deckers is Barbadian Holly Sinckler.
According to Mr. Browne the club consistently makes
donations to deserving charities. Ironically, the presentation to the Heart &
Stroke Foundation of Barbados was attributed to the loss of a former club
member, Barbadian Hendy Clarke, who passed away due to a heart attack while
playing cricket at a local cricket ground. It was thought fitting that his club
should contribute towards the ongoing efforts of the Foundation in combating
heart disease and stroke.
