Manager of the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s CDP&R “Gym with a
difference” programme, Kim Clarke-Grant, was among a group of 24 women leaders,
representing 13 countries, who recently took part in ExxonMobil Foundation’s
Global Women In Management Training Course (GWIM). The programme was held in
Washington, D.C., from August 28-September 22, 2006, and targeted women managers
who are working in community organizations in developing countries.
“I feel privileged to have been chosen to attend the course”
said Mrs. Clarke-Grant, “and I wish to again thank Esso Standard Oil and Mr.
Cally Boyea for arranging the scholarship on my behalf. Not only have I been
able to strengthen my management skills, but importantly I was given the
opportunity to meet and interact with women who function in similar positions as
mine, but in different environments.”
The comprehensive training programme covered nonprofit
leadership, financial and resource management, strategic planning, human
resources, grant writing and personal empowerment
“You know” she continued, “we take so much for granted, but
it was interesting to note that, in spite of the differences in our backgrounds
and cultures, we all face very similar operational, financial and human
relations situations in the workplace, and it was certainly instructive and
inspirational to see their approaches and solutions, also how they see
themselves and their careers.”
The follow-up segment of the course is now in progress, in
which there is a year-long coaching programme designed to help participants
achieve their personal and professional goals.
Mrs. Clarke-Grant noted, “The training has been very
applicable to my work here at the Foundation, and I will say that what I have
learned I have been able to implement almost on a daily basis.”
“Perhaps the best and most satisfying part of the programme
is that I now have a network of people across the globe with whom I am in
constant contact, and am able to share ideas with them and seek solutions to
common problems or concerns.”
