Heart assistance
The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados
recently helped the Antigua Ministry of Health to train health
care workers in preparation for Cricket World Cup 2007. 32
doctors, nurses and emergency medical technicians were
instructed in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS). At the end of
the two-day training programme the participants were certified
by the American Heart Association.
Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rhonda
Sealey-Thomas said that although this is a part of the Ministry
of Health's preparation for World Cup 2007, it would also serve
to better equip the health care providers with the skills needed
to deal with cardiac emergencies.
The Basic Cardiac Life Support is a specific
level of pre-hospital medical care provided by trained
responders including emergency medical technicians. It consists
of a number of life saving techniques such as airway free flow
(the protection and maintenance of patient airway including the
use of airway adjuncts such as an oral or nasal airway);
breathing (with or without the aid of a respirator); and
circulation (the movement of blood through the beating of the
heart or the emergency measure of Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation).
In addition to Antigua, Heart & Stroke
Foundation of Barbados instructors have also provided similar
training for World Cup volunteers in Barbados and St. Lucia.
