Prof. Hassell Honoured by Caribbean Society
Barbadian cardiologist Professor Trevor Hassell was recently
honoured by his peers at the 20th Caribbean Cardiology Conference held recently
at the Sonesta Beach Resort, Key Biscayne. The event, which was attended by
cardiac specialists, nurses and technologists from the Caribbean region and the
Americas, was hosted by the Caribbean Cardiac Society. A crystal plaque and
scroll was presented by Dr. Edward Chung, president of the Society following the
reading of a citation written by Dr. Geoff Massay and read by Dr. Rudolph Delice
of Barbados.
The citation noted Prof. Hassell’s contribution to the
academic and the administrative development of cardiology in Barbados. Dr.
Massay pointed to Prof. Hassell’s many publications including his seminal paper
on Rheumatic Fever in Barbados published in the British Medical Journal in 1972
which “demonstrated that, with effort and application, academic output was
possible from one of the outposts of the University of the West Indies.”
Professor Hassell also has contributed to the establishment
of the Cardiac Unit and Cardiovascular Outpatients Clinic at the Queen Elizabeth
Hospital in Barbados. Dr. Massay noted that many medical students from all over
the Caribbean region learnt critical clinical analysis under Professor Hassell
as he helped to put Barbados at the focal point of cardiology treatment in the
Caribbean.
In his reply, Professor Hassell indicated his concern at the
lack of awareness of current medical students of the heritage that is being
passed on to them. He urged the gathering of senior medical specialists to share
not only their skills but also the proud heritage of dedication and innovative
skills which has been inherited from the pioneers of Caribbean cardiology.
Professor Hassell then announced his intention to facilitate the development of
a book on the ‘Pioneers of Caribbean Cardiology’ with a contribution of B$5,000
to Professor Howard Spencer of the University of the West Indies.
