Carib Rehab - Keeping you able
Ideally situated in pleasant, well-appointed and easily
accessible surroundings at Friendship, Hothersal Turning, just off the ABC
highway, Carib Rehab has been pleased to satisfy the needs of its clients over
the past 16 years.
Owned and managed by Registered Occupation Therapist, Hilary
Bethell and with a professional and friendly staff of 10, the company proudly
lives up to its motto: “Aiming to keep you able.”
A graduate of McGill University in Canada, Mrs. Bethell
worked in the Barbados government service for 5 years at the Psychiatric
Hospital. She then was employed at the Barbados Community College for 5 years,
where she developed an occupational therapy assistant programme in coordination
with Project Hope, before going into private practice in 1979
“Carib Rehab really started out of a need for sourcing
equipment,” said Mrs. Bethell. “In my private practice I found that clients
would continually be asking about aids for daily living, and there were those
with disabilities who couldn’t source equipment that they needed. I would order
the equipment for them. As this activity grew, going into the business of
retailing equipment was a natural progression.”
Now Carib Rehab is extensively stocked with medical,
hospital and rehabilitation equipment and supplies, including mobility equipment
such as wheelchairs and power scooters, items for bath and toilet safety, daily
living aids such as adapted cutlery and personal pagers and alarms, and home
nursing items. Also available are pressure area care items such as special
mattresses, incontinence care items, medical and dental supplies, foot care
items, rehabilitation aids, splints and sports medicine products, and pressure
support hosiery. The sales office is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from
10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday.
Carib Rehab is proud to have won the Growth Award from
Invacare Corp.for Latin and South America. Mrs. Bethell herself was awarded the
Silver Crown of Merit by the government of Barbados for her outstanding work in
rehabilitation of people with disabilities in Barbados. She has served with many
NGOs and government organizations and is married to Patrick Bethell, who she
credits as being an inspiration and leading force in the success in the
business.
“There is continuous education of our staff as we keep up to
date with the latest equipment and methods on the market,” said Mrs. Bethell,
“and we try to give back to the community, for example, through discounts to
members of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons, through the Hope
Foundation and other means. We also set up booths at health fairs and
participate in trade shows, seminars and other events where we are able to
demonstrate the usefulness of or type of products, and from time to time our
staff give lectures and talks on health care topics.”
