ECC News - Care for Life

The health and safety of a company’s workforce is paramount to its success. Therefore, companies need to be assured their employees would know what to do if someone at their office or business collapsed with a heart attack or stroke. Could they or their employees manage the vital first few minutes of a worksite injury or medical illness?

Under the aegis of the American Heart Association (AHA), the Heart Foundation of Barbados (HFOB) Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) programme provides training and certification in First Aid. This course - HeartSaver First Aid - teaches management of medical and trauma related injuries and emergencies as well as an introduction to CPR and the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), a simple but revolutionary device that restarts the dying heart.

We are expanding our range of activities to promote this training more widely in partnership with the Barbados National Bank Inc. (BNB). The Care for Life programme is a community based First Aid training exercise aimed at training a large number of persons at a single event.

The Care for Life programme comprises a full day’s training and will be run twice on separate Saturdays, 13th and 20th November from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. To ensure international standards, there will be a simple end of course assessment and awarding of AHA certificate cards. These cards allow the candidates worldwide recognition as certified providers of HeartSaver First Aid from the AHA.

Research shows that individuals trained in First Aid have fewer and less severe accidents both on and off the job than untrained individuals. Interestingly patients to which they attend have lower morbidity than those where no pre-hospital care is given. First Aid is an essential part of a company’s responsibility towards an overall health and safety programme.

HFOB’s ECC instructors are all accredited by AHA. The Care for Life training course is fully recognised by the AHA through the use of their approved training manuals. HFOB, thanks to the very generous sponsorship of BNB, is offering the Care for Life programme at a specifically discounted all inclusive price for each participant of just $75 which covers tuition, full lunch and breaks, reference manual and course completion certificate.

Please call Stephanie Catling at 437 3312 to book a place on one of these courses.
