CEO’s Outlook

This quarter it is continuing health topics as I write this not long after Christmas with much visiting friends and far too much eating and not enough exercise. So I certainly need to lose those pounds put on whilst I was away in September and not yet shed because of over indulgence between Christmas and New Year.

Top ten heart healthy tips for 2006 include

1. Butt out Give up smoking
2. Get physical Take daily exercise
3. Slim down Lose that Christmas weight
4. Step on Get a Pedometer and count your steps
5. Reduce the fat Cut your intake of saturated fat
6. Get fruity Have a fruit juice at breakfast
7. Shake off salt Ban the salt cellar from the table
8. Walk off stress Stop talking the talk start walking the walk
9. Omega amigo Try two portions per week of oily fish
10. Cut the calories By drinking less alcohol

From SAGA magazine, June 2005 edition in their Here’s Health appears the advice that a daily aspirin can prolong our lives as we get older. Evidence from several studies over the past twenty years demonstrates that a daily aspirin may do more than just cure a headache. Already those who have had a heart attack or bypass surgery are advised in the UK to take a “mini” aspirin (75mg) a day to reduce the risk of further trouble.

At a health conference in London early in 2005 experts took this advice further and recommended that everyone over 50 should have a daily mini-aspirin even if they appear to be perfectly healthy. In May 2005 an American study found that the heart attack risk fell by 34% and the risk of stroke caused by blood clots fell by 30% in women over 65 who had regularly taken aspirin daily.

Those already taking blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin however should not take aspirin, which is also present in many over-the-counter remedies, so some persons may be taking the drug without realising it. Therefore do make certain that you check very carefully the labels of any drugs that you are taking.

Although the risks of taking min-aspirin are low you should check with your doctor first. There is no substitute for a proper examination by your doctor.

So what’s been happening since my last Outlook?

Our income generating plans are very much based around “more of the same” as they say. In addition what else is planned for the immediate future?

ACLS course 27th/28th February
Fundraising concert with Barbados National Youth Orchestra at Holders 3rd April
Nation’s Health Fest 8th April
Annual General Meeting and official launch of Heart Foundation of Barbados 18th April
21st Anniversary celebrations commence 18th April
Bingo Sherbourne Conference Centre 4th May

So we will continue to look at income generating projects as a matter of priority. All our events need to meet our main objective of keeping Barbadians heart healthy whether they are:

Fundraising or
Educational or
Profile raising

Your help as ever will be needed.
