Looking Forward
By Adrian Randall
The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HFOB) was proud to
celebrate its 21st Anniversary in April this year, and at our AGM on April 18th
we embraced stroke to become the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HSFB).
Since being appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Heart
Foundation on September 1, 2004, much of my time has been spent attempting to
raise the profile of the organisation.
This certainly is an exciting time for us in our growth development as we
promote our mission, which has now become:
‘To keep people heart healthy and reduce suffering and death
from heart disease and stroke’
So what does the future hold now that we have become the
Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados?
Well, we will certainly be seeking to consolidate our
position as the leader in the promotion of a heart healthy lifestyle whilst
ensuring that all matters pertaining to stroke awareness are incorporated.
In this respect we will be concentrating on two key areas of our strategic plan
which have been revised to include stroke:
‘To provide best quality advice, training and management of
heart disease and stroke prevention’
‘To educate the public and promote an awareness of heart
disease and stroke issues and the role of the HSFB’
In particular work is already well in hand to produce a
specific rehabilitation exercise programme for stoke patients using our CDP&R
centre gym. This will include teaching sessions, dietary advice and counseling.
The Heart Smart Fitness Challenge, a special two-month CDP&R
project was recently launched, under the sponsorship of DaCosta Mannings Inc.
The Healthy Lifestyles Seminar for Business and Professional
Executives retains the theme of 2005 of fitness and will take place on Thursday
July 6 at Sherbourne Conference Centre. There is a range of excellent speakers
lined up to ensure that everyone attending is “Keeping Fit for 2007”.
Early September should see the long awaited launch of our
Healthy Hearts Clubs promotion in primary schools as part of the Foundation’s
educational outreach programme to the youth of Barbados.
