Heartline Magazine April - June 2006
CEO's Outlook
Let’s start this edition by taking a look back at certain of
our activities during the first months of 2006.
Cardiac Disease Prevention and
Rehabilitation
The publication of the new CDP&R leaflet in January was a
resounding success and we are already reprinting thanks to a generous client of
CDP&R.
As ardent readers of Heartline will be aware Mrs. Kim
Clarke-Grant succeeded Mrs. Shirley Gill on February 1, 2006. Rhonda Fields has
been appointed a staff nurse joining Hazel Fergusson and Alison Richards.
February was the tenth month of operation of the volunteer
Medical Advisor scheme set up by the Medical Committee. The scheme seems to be
working well particularly as it introduces a few more doctors to the Foundation.
Dr. Hemant Boolani has succeeded Dr. Colin Alert as Honorary Medical Director.
Numbers enrolled on the programme in March were 105 which
was five more than February and attendance also rose from 84 (84%) to 91(87%).
Numbers have picked up considerably following the usual fall off during the
Christmas period.
Three exercise bikes were donated by DaCosta Mannings.
Emergency Cardiac Care
Mrs. Gina Pitts took up the post of ECC Manager as of
January 30, 2006. Her aim in her first month, February, was to put the programme
course management in place.
March saw the first of many major instructor meetings. The
new 2005 American Heart Association scientific guidelines were released with a
modular lecture format for basic life support, advanced cardiac life support and
Paediatric Life support instructors. The focus was not only on the scientific
changes in the life support routines, but included the new format for the course
delivery. This was conveyed to 35 instructors over two evenings.
An extensive interest in the courses which the Heart
Foundation delivers was evident in the first quarter of 2006. More corporate
entities have been in touch to have their staff trained. DaCosta Manning also
requested an Occupational First Aid guideline as they are setting up Health and
Safety Committees throughout their company. C.O Williams confirmed their mass
training taking place in April and increased the overall numbers to 100.
Fundraising
The bingo evening on February 2 at Sherbourne was not as
successful as the previous one held last year with only 250 persons attending
against over 300 persons the last time. Therefore takings were down
significantly although the raffle, an additional feature this time, did help
boost the income. A profit of just under $5,000 was achieved which was below
budget.
However on April 3 the HFOB Concert at Holders was a
resounding success certainly from a financial point of view. As I write this
article not all ticket money has been collected but the profit is already in
excess of $12,000 which is much better than we budgeted. Only disappointments
were that despite higher ticket sales audience numbers attending were about same
as last year and the replacement of Chinese auction with normal auction reduced
proceeds accordingly.
Communications
The TV media campaign, Heart Smart, based on the KAPs
survey, which was launched on CBC TV on Monday November 14, 2005 started again
on Monday January 2, 2006 after a break over Christmas. It continued to be very
thought provoking. Additionally the results of the initial KAPs survey were
covered fully in an article in the January – March 2006 edition of Heartline.
The follow up KAPs survey will take place later in 2006.
The Joys of Healthy Cooking
This may appear at first glance to be an odd subtitle for a
section of the CEO’s Outlook but earlier this year I was presented by Dr. Tony
Gale with a copy of a book with this title. This excellent book co-authored by
Wendy Clarke, Rosie Jackman, Alison White and Manuelita Zephirin is not only a
super cookery book in Part 2 but also and perhaps more importantly from the
Foundation’s point of view in Part 1 it covers exceptionally well all the
nutritional points that we are trying so hard to get across to those with heart
problems.
So do go out and buy a copy of this book whilst stocks last.
Finally as you will have read elsewhere in this edition
April 18, 2006, which was the 21st Anniversary of the Foundation, saw the last
AGM of the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados and the launch of the Heart & Stroke
Foundation of Barbados. I do hope you like our new livery which was previewed to
members at the AGM.
All the various changes will be being introduced over the
next few months so that by October 1, 2006 as we start our next financial year
everything will be in place.
