ECC NEWS - NRC on a mission
The National Resuscitation Council of Barbados (NRC) has
embarked on a mission to promote public awareness, advocate improvement in
Emergency Medical /Cardiac Services and to develop resources and professional
training in the public and private sectors that are involved in the chain of
survival. This is according to the Director of the Council, Dr. Harold Watson,
as he addressed a meeting of that body on Friday March 4th. Minister of Health
Dr. Jerome Walcott, and the newly appointed Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Joy St.
John were in the audience, and heard of the Council’s work to date and future
plans for the organization.
Dr. Watson said that the NRC’s mission is a concept that was
sanctioned by the Inter-American Heart Foundation and the American Heart
Association two years ago as a way of bringing a local focus and partnership to
emergency cardiac care. Committee administration, resuscitation course
standards, EAS courses including refresher, EMT, Paramedic, Dispatch, and CME
requirements have already been reviewed and discussed, he pointed out. Dr.
Watson also noted that among other subjects discussed were community courses,
telecommunications and the 911 single system, emergency medicine legislation and
standards for ambulances, as well as participation in overseas courses and
conferences.
The audience felt that in the future the Council could have
a role in overseeing and evaluating the training of emergency medical personnel
and paramedics, as well as being the voice informing government of the needs of
emergency care in Barbados.
