World Heart Day 2003
After three very successful World Heart Day (WHD)
celebrations, the Heart Foundation of Barbados will be hosting its fourth annual
World Heart Day on Sunday September 28, 2003. This year will be dedicated to the
topic "Women, Heart Disease and Stroke". The World Heart Foundation chose this
topic since a majority of women throughout the world underestimate their risk of
heart disease. It has been found in studies that more than 60% of women identify
breast cancer as their greatest health concern when they are in fact eight times
more likely to die of heart disease.
World Heart Day is held in over 90 countries around the
world. In Barbados, a public lecture / discussion will be held on Sunday
September 28, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. at the Teaching Complex of the University of the
West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Consultant cardiologist Dr. Raymond Massay will
speak on "Women and Heart Disease in Barbados", and consultant physician Dr.
Vishnar Poddar will give the public the latest results on the Barbados Register
of Strokes study when he addresses the topic "Women and Stroke". All of this
will help to reinforce "a heart for life", the World Heart Day slogan.
Chairman of the WHD Committee, Dr. Adrian Lorde, expects
another successful World Heart Day this year. He said " It is hoped that this
increased awareness created will help decrease the incidence of cardiovascular
disease and stroke against women."
World Heart Day is co-sponsored by the World Health
Organisation and UNESCO. World Heart Day came into being in 1999 as an
inspiration of then WHF President Dr. Antoni Bayés de Luna, who had the vision
that all World Heart Foundation members should, with one voice, spread the word
about heart health and a heart for life. His dream has become a reality: World
Heart Day is now celebrated on the last Sunday in September every year.
