Welcome to the website for the Heart & Stroke Foundation
of Barbados Inc.!
As we continue our endeavours to develop this website as an
important arm of the educational and marketing outreach efforts of the
Foundation, we sincerely hope that the information provided will be both
interesting and enlightening to you the viewer.
The Heart & Stroke Foundation Inc., evolved from the Heart Foundation of Barbados which celebrated its twenty-first anniversary on April
18th 2006, and on that date completed the process of change as it
formally included stroke. Stroke is caused by
abnormalities of blood vessels and, like heart attacks, is often due to sudden
occlusion or blockage of an artery. While heart attacks involve the coronary
arteries, most forms of stroke occur when a brain or cerebral artery becomes
blocked. Thus stroke and heart attack are simply manifestations of blood vessel
disease in different parts of the body and the risk factors for these two
conditions are basically the same and include hypertension, lack of exercise, tobacco smoking,
diabetes, high blood cholesterol and obesity.
We appreciate your visit to our site and hope that you will
feel persuaded to come back regularly, as well as to encourage your friends and
colleagues to do similarly. As you navigate the website, simply click on the
"red" links provided for additional information.
Thanks again. And we would love to hear from you if you
would take a moment to give us your feedback.
